Earthquakes in Canada
The following map shows the earthquakes that have happened in and around Canada between 1627 and 2017. As you can see, many areas of British Columbia could sustain an earthquake.
Planning for an Earthquake
Planning for an earthquake must happen before the earthquake happens.
- Create an earthquake survival kit.
- Practice Drop, Cover, Hold -Count while shaking, Count to 60 after shaking has stopped
- If by the coast move to high ground after the earthquake.
During an Earthquake
When you feel an earthquake drop to the ground and take cover under a desk or table. Point your back towards any windows or glass. If you not near a table or desk drop cover and hold next to a piece of furniture (chair, couch) or an interior wall. Protect the back of your neck and head with one arm and hold on to the desk, table or furniture with the other. Slowly count "1 one thousand, 2 one thousand..." Continue till the shaking stops (this helps to keep you and everyone else calm). Once shaking has stopped count for 60 seconds.
If outside move away from buildings, wires, or anything overhead. |
If you live near the coast after you have counted to 60 move to high ground as quickly and safely as possible. "High ground" depends on where you live, play or visit. You want to be out of the way of a possible tsunami.
