Having a fire plan is essential, but it's equally important to practice it regularly. Consider conducting a practice drill at night to observe how your children react while they are sleeping.
Making a Fire Plan
Download and print the Fire Escape Plan

Review the Plan and Rules
A fire plan is only good if it is known and followed. Remember the following:
If your clothes catch on fire STOP, DROP and ROLL until your clothes stop burning. Try to remember to cover your face as you are rolling.
- Make a fire escape plan and review it a few times per year.
- If there is smoke crawl low.
- Don't try to bring anything with you. Your job is to get out of the house.
- Crawl to the door and check to feel if it is hot with the back of your hand. If the door is hot use an alternative escape route and proceed to your meeting place.
- If the door is cool, slowly open the door. Keep low. If safe proceed to your escape route and meeting place

Practice Your Plan (6 times per year)
Now that you have a plan, practice it. The Ministry of Education requires 6 practice times per year.
Practice leaving from both the primary and alternate exit from the room(s). Are there locked doors that need to be opened? Security grilles or screens? Can these be easily opened from the inside?
Practice at different times of day and night (fires are not on a 9-5 scheduled) People often act differently if awoken from sleep. This needs to be practiced as well.
Practice at least once in each season (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn)
You should be able to be at the meeting place within about 2 minutes from the fire alarm going off.
If you have visitors staying with you make sure they know the plan as well.
